A James Halliday 4 star rated winery, A.Retief Wines was established by winemaker Alex Retief. Located in the New South Wales wine region, the winery was founded in the year 2008. The winemaker and owner of company, Alex, had a love for this region and he constantly tries to find the best vineyards in the region to source it grapes from.
Alex, in a young age realised his passion for life which allowed him to make way for an amazing career in the industry. In his early age, he was influenced by his parents who were working upon a vineyard in Gundagai, near Ladysmith. As a result, he got himself enrolled at Charles Sturt University (CSU) for a wine science course. In 2001, he finally got his career in action by working as a trainee in university’s vineyard. Next year, he joined the Fetzer Vineyards in Sonoma Valley, California. In 2003, he returned to Hunter Valley for lived there for 3 years working at Languedoc. In the year 2005, he was appointed as winemaker in Bordeaux region’s famous winery - Château de Lagarde. He worked here for 2 years and finally in 2008, he returned Australia to start his own label, ‘A. Retief’.
Being a part of present generation, Alex runs his winery in the Urban Winery, Sydney set-up. A phenomenon very recent in the world of wines, it allows a winemaker to locate their wineries in urban settings away from vineyards and rural places. This trend makes full use of the latest technology which makes transportation of grapes and other processes much easier to carry out. Likewise, A. Retief wines functions as an open winery in a similar set-up, allowing its customers to enjoy the cellar door and wine bar along with an events space.
Alex presently sources grapes on contractual basis from the vineyards of Gundagai, Hilltops, Canberra District and Tumbaruna located in the southern NSW.
