Casella Wines- From Local to Global

If one were to compile case studies of successful wine brands across the world, there is no way one can ignore the Casella Wine. It is the story of a young couple who immigrated to Australia in 1957, leaving their roots of wine-making since 1820 behind. The new land of opportunity again brought them to the same legacy but with the difference that success to be tasted in this new beginning would last generations. It will make not only the family proud but also the nation with its contribution to the Aussie wine industry as such.

Filippo and Maria Casella would have never dreamt that the piece of land they are buying in Yenda in 1965 for growing grapes for local wine makers is the first step that they are taking to create history. Within the next four years their grape growing business led to having a winery of own. So, the forward integration culminated in the creation of a winey in 1969. For the next two decades, it was labour and pure business acumen which saw the Casella Wine brand rise with pride.

John Casella, one name who would lead Casella to next level of growth, was made Managing Director in 1994. It was his dream to create a wine which is actually fun and non-traditional. It was to be low-cost and did not have the aura of heavy, stuffy wine around it. And, thus was created Yellow Tail wines in 2001. This brand was to become one of the most popular wine brands of its time not only in Australia but also around the globe. No other wine brand of Australia had introduced the Aussie wine industry to the world in such a big way ever before. The brand still sells 12.5 million cases to more than 50 countries in a year.

During the course of its well-crafted journey, Casella has bought other wine brands to add to its portfolio, such as Peter Lehmann, Brands Laira, Young Brute and Morris Wines, and together these are called Casella Family Brands. During this course, the winery won about 2400 awards, with many reputed ones from Australia and abroad. Many of its wines have won accolades at different wine shows and popular wine critics have always adored its products.
The story of Casella is of establishing an empire from humble beginnings over generations of hard work and exhibition of sharp business acumen.
