The Australian winemaking industry and Barossa Valley shall always remain indebted to the efforts of the legendary winemaker, Peter Lehmann.
It was in the late 1970s that Barossa wine grape growing community was hit with a severe grape surplus. The companies denied to buy those grapes and honour any contracts from the grape growers. This is something that Peter Lehmann noticed and realized that this would destroy the livelihoods of the 140 family growers.
He was not ready to let that happen and that’s when he took the charge to create a wine that was not only sourced locally but also embodied the spirit of the local community. His vision and actions paved a way forward to benefit everyone, creating a wine legacy like no other.
Peter Lehmann Wines were established in 1979 with an aim to help his fellow grape growers in the Barossa region today create a range of wines that are generous, bold and full of character, just like the man himself. This revolutionary movement took the Barossa region by storm, consequently producing some of the best wine varietals and blends in all of Australia.
The wine made from the first vintage in 1980 was called ‘The Futures’ to showcase Peter’s commitment to the growers. He kept his promise of paying the growers first as the money started coming in.
The Barossa community sailed together through the tough times under Peter’s guidance, and not just made great wines but also preserved the future of the land and the Barossa region. Today this longstanding relationship with the same community of family growers in Barossa gives the Peter Lehmann winemakers access to the very best grapes across the length and breadth of the Barossa.
His compassion is highly regarded everywhere and he is often referred to as the man who saved the Barossa Valley.
Peter Lehmann introduced a number of unique wines under different ranges. Their Portrait Wines are made to ‘paint a portrait’ of their home, the iconic Barossa.
They represent the collective capabilities of the entire Barossa community – the vineyards, the vines and the people who made every single bottle of Peter Lehmann Wines.
These vibrant and approachable wines are crafted to showcase the unique characteristics of their origin.
