Famous for creating exceptional quality wines, Fermoy Estate is an award-winning winery having its vineyards settled in the revered region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Picturesque environs in the Wilyabrup region surround this premium winery.
The History of Fermoy Estate
Beryl and John Anderson laid the foundation of Fermoy Estate in 1985 and named it after one of John’s ancestors in his honour. Fermoy was a Scottish businessman who purchased a piece of land of Fermoy Estate in the North of Cork in Ireland.
The winery, however, happened to realize its potential in 1987 and produced its first vintage the very next year. The year 1999 witnessed the winery being sold to a Dutch businessman by the name of Hans Hulsbergen, and thereafter most of the products of the winery began to export to Europe.
A decade down the line, John and Aaron Young purchased Fermoy Estate in December 2010. The vineyards of the winery are taken care of by a full-time, diligent team that picks and prunes grapes by hand to ensure their consistency and quality.
Winemakers of Fermoy Estate
Coralie Garnier-Lewis and Liz Dawson, the female duo who were winemakers of Fermoy Estate, took it upon themselves to create wines that were nothing short of elegance, quality and excellence. It won’t be an exaggeration to say that if it weren’t for them, Fermoy wines wouldn’t have made a name for themselves so easily and quickly. Liz was associated with the winery as a senior winemaker for over a decade before she bade adieu to be a mother.
Jeremy Hodgson joined as a senior winemaker in January 2015 to fill Liz’s shoes. With a first-class degree in viticulture and oenology and extensive experience of working with a multitude of Western Australian wineries, he puts his knowledge and experience to good use. Premier location and top-hole fruit have always been his priority to continue creating best-in-class wines for Fermoy.
Fermoy Estate Wines
Although there’s no dearth of wines under its portfolio that have helped the winery establish itself as one of the premier ones in the Australian wine industry, Fermoy’s Shiraz range, in particular, has always managed to please wine lovers’ palates like anything.
Fermoy Estate FE Geographe Shiraz 2019
Dressed in a bright shade of cherry red with tinges of ink-black, this Fermoy Estate Shiraz has an aromatic nose of intense blue and red fruits accompanied by nuances of cocoa and spice, such as peppercorn, star anise, vanilla bean and cherry pit. The wine leads to a medium-bodied palate filled with fruity flavours of juicy plum, cherry and blueberry. The complex characters of nori, dark chocolate, charcuterie and spice add intrigue and depth to this bold Shiraz. While tannins render the structure and frame, the soft acidity in the wine contributes to the balanced, fresh and lengthy finish. This red makes for an everyday wine going perfectly with regular meals, like wood-fired pizza, BBQ T-Bone steak and pasta bolognese.
Fermoy Estate Shiraz 2019
Flaunting dark red garnet colour, this 2019 vintage of Fermoy Estate Shiraz has a fragrant nose, which is best defined by aromas of mulberry, black cherry, blood orange and satsuma plum, supported by intricate notes of rosemary, white pepper spice and star anise. The Shiraz stimulates the front palate with mouth-watering flavours of red and violet flowers, raspberry and blueberry, whereas undertones of roasting herbs, cured meats and pepper spice balance the middle palate. Tannic layers complete the Shiraz giving it length and structure. Food that goes exceptionally well with this elegant red is chargrilled rib-eye beef with redcurrant sauce.
Fermoy Estate Reserve Shiraz 2018
Sporting a rich, ruby red hue with hints of purple, this Reserve Shiraz has lifted aromas of blackberry, black cherry, vanilla bean, dark spice and blue fruits readily leaping out of the glass. This medium-bodied flavourful wine is layered with black and blue fruits upon roasted meats and wooded herbs. Lifted spices of white pepper and star anise veneer the structure and bouquet of 30% entire bunches during fermentation - rosemary, orange peel and lavender. The glossy tannins lead to the round finish of the wine that is every bit vital, complex and elegant.
