Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz: Each Vintage is Perfection

History of Glaetzer Wines

The winery traces its history back to 1888 when former Glaetzers emigrated from Brandenberg in Germany to settle in South Australia, especially Barossa Valley. Upon their arrival in Port Adelaide, they moved to the town of Nuriootpa to begin a new chapter of their life. Glaetzer family was one of the pioneers of viticulture to have inhabited the valley.

It was nearly after a century that Colin Glaetzer, the founding father of Glaetzer Wines, decided to make the most of the quality Barossa Valley region by establishing a family-run boutique winery. And, with the birth of the winery, marked an epoch in Colin’s family journey.

The Winemaker

Carrying forward his father's legacy, Ben Glaetzer is the chief winemaker who ensures to keep up the winemaking traditions at the winery. After his graduation from Adelaide University in winemaking, Ben extensively gallivanted around the world-famous wine regions only to return to Barossa and join his family's winemaking business. It's his unmatched calibre to blend conventional winemaking techniques with a contemporary approach that reflects in each wine style crafted by Glaetzer Wines. With numerous prestigious awards and trophies in his kitty, no wonder Ben is regarded as a force to reckon with in the winemaking domain.

Elegant and unique wines created with minimal intervention are the prowess of this irrepressible winemaker - wines deemed classic and are every bit of Barossan trait. Speaking of which, the extensive collection of super-premium Barossa Valley wines by Glaetzer Wines includes the sought-after Bishop among others.

Bishop by Ben Glaetzar

Manifesting the truest expression of Shiraz that can only be identified with the terroir of Barossa Valley, Glaetzer Bishop is a wine with elegance and a lingering finish.
Deriving its name from the maiden name of Colin’s wife, Judith, Bishop's wine bottles flaunt the sign of Venus in the centre of the label, which stands for feminine energy. It also symbolizes the Roman goddess, Venus, as per mythology, or her Greek counterpart Aphrodite. However, the sign also holds relevance in ancient Egypt - an acknowledgement of the Bishop’s association with Anaperenna and Amon-Ra.

Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz

Excellent old vine fruit is sourced from 35-120 years old vineyards in the premier Ebenezer area, which is perched at the northern tip of the region Barossa Valley - no wonder Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz, be it any vintage, is every red wine lover’s favourite.

When it comes to vinification, the grape must is fermented in open fermenters, followed by extended maceration for the good development of tannins so that the resulting wine is approachable and soft. Afterwards, 16 months of maturation takes place in a combination of 40% new oak barrels and the remaining 60% in 2-3 years old hogshead barrels (10% American & 90% French).

As this Shiraz is easily approachable, it is best to drink it young. However, the wine also has the cellaring potential of up to good 10-15 years.
