Umamu Estate Wines: A Unique Taste of Margaret River with a Personal Touch

The producer of elegant and handcrafted Australian wines from the Margaret River wine region, Umamu Estate wines was founded by Mac & Ann. The couple discovered the wine region in the 80s and ever since it became their favourite part of Australia. It was during the late 90s that Mac realised how much he loves the vineyard as it appeals deeply to the family roots and is a natural extension of his passion for agriculture and wine.

The winery has been creating exquisite and handcrafted wines since 1978. Living up to the name of the Margaret River, Umamu Estate takes immense pride in crafting elegant wines that are capable of ageing and developing. Driven by the philosophy of balance and contentment, each of its wines takes its own sweet time to develop in the bottle prior to its release - something rarely followed by other wineries across the region.

Ever since the purchasing of the Margaret River vineyard, they have increased the vine plantings and developed great relationships with local producers who have been creating award-winning Margaret River wines with their fruit. Each bottle at Umamu Estate wines is created meticulously keeping the delicate balance intact along with the family’s handwritten messages on the labels.

The characteristics and complexities of Umamu wines give them an edge over their contemporaries. This family-run winery strongly believes in making wines that are enjoyed when they’re ready and not right after bottling. Having received awards galore for making a mark in the wine industry, it certainly calls for treating your taste buds with some of the finest Umamu Estate wines. 1. Umamu Estate Wines Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Produced from one of the oldest vines that were planted as many as 40 years ago, this gem of Cabernet Sauvignon is kept in French oak for ageing for about one year and a half. Afterwards, as is the case with other Umamu wines, the winemaker lets the wine mature in the bottle before being released for wine lovers to relish its flavours. Speaking of which, this good-length red tastes of dark chocolate and ripe red plums. Flaunting a deep red garnet colour, this Cab Sav leaves a robust finish in the mouth. When it comes to the nose of the wine, it emits the rich aromas of leafy, mulberry and plum.

2. Umamu Estate Wines Margaret River Cabernet Merlot 2017

Inspired by Aunty May of a renowned winery in France’s Bordeaux region, Umamu Estate Wines decided to produce this revered blend, which comprises 79% of Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% of Merlot, back in 1997. After the skin stays in contact with the grape juice for 12-18 days, the fermentation of the wine takes place in both open as well as closed static tanks before the skins are gently pressed off. Afterwards, the wine is matured in new French oak barrels for about ten months. Featuring a deep garnet colour, this Gold medal awarded beautiful blend exudes the aromas of chocolate and dark fruits with good intensity. With grainy tannins, this medium-length red leaves a dark chocolate finish on the palate.

3. Umamu Estate Wines Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2016

One of the most common blends in Australia, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is made exceptionally well by Umamu Estate Wines. The vineyard plantation of Sauvignon Blanc dates back to 1987 whereas the vines of Semillon belong to 1997. In order to ensure the complete development of the flavours during the ripening process, the winemaker leaves no stone unturned to look after both of the vine canopies. With 64% of Sauvignon Blanc and 36% of Semillon, it is one of the most versatile wines any wine buff can ask for. The delicious and mouth-watering SBS is a gold winner and a treat to the eyes as it is to the palate. Displaying a clear vibrant pale colour along green tinges, this layered blend emits whiffs of beautiful citrus.

4. Umamu Estate Wines MacAnn Margaret River Sparkling 2019

Celebration of any sort is incomplete without this MacAnn Sparkling playing an important part in it. Named after the founders of the winery, it is the very first wine that came into being in the MacAnn Sparkling series. Created from the blend of Semillon and a soupcon of Sauvignon Blanc, this wine is made using the traditional method of winemaking. Showcasing a clear vibrant pale straw accompanied by alive beads, the wine releases refined citrus notes and tastes of snow peas with royal gala apples on the palate. Because of its good length, this elegant sparkling leaves a lingering dryness and crisp finish as an aftertaste.

5. Umamu Estate Wines Margaret River Rosé 2018

This Umamu delicacy is for all those wine lovers who love experimenting with wines and are always down for savouring something unique. Having a blend of 82% of Cabernet Franc and the remaining 18% of Merlot, it is a delightful blend regardless of the food it’s paired with. Grown in an open canopy, the winemaker makes sure that the fruit receives gentle light so that it helps in the growth of soft tannins and aromatic berry perfumes. Carrying a light pink colour with salmon shades, the wine smells of floral and fresh red berries. This good-length Rosé feels crisp and delicate in the mouth leaving a sophisticated finish of red fruits.

Now that you’ve made it so far, it’s about time you made your choice and treated yourself to one of these finest wines crafted by the award-winning Umamu Estate Wines.
