Savour the Best Cool-Climate Wines at Soumah

Located in the Warramate foothills of the Yarra Valle, Soumah is a family vineyard known for making wines with the charm of northern Italy but the provenance of the majestic Yarra Valley. It was established in 1997 by Director Brett Butcher who has been a part of the wine industry since the beginning of his career. He ventured into winemaking with an aim to craft premium drops. To achieve this, the brand believes in the philosophy of quality over quantity, sourcing fruit from “definitive vineyard site, nurturing viticulture”. The vineyard is managed by Tim Brown who, with his practice of minimal input, ensures that the terroir and varietal characteristics speak for themselves. With this, the winery has witnessed great success over the years, exporting to various countries across the globe. It is especially known for Soumah Chardonnay and Soumah Pinot Noir that have won multiple awards and accolades.

Soil & Climate

The winery enjoys every advantage of a cool climate, undulating topography and ancient soils. The vineyard is elevated up off the Valley Floor which gives some protection against winter frosts while gentle slopes help drain the soil. The ancient, mountain derived grey sandy clay loams with broken sandstone offer water holding capacity to protect the vines from summer drought stress. Low fertility and lower summer rainfall naturally limit the crop. Cool nights and slow temperature rise during the day, help retain the unique aroma and flavour profile of every grape variety grown in the vineyard.

As a part of its ‘supervised control’ philosophy about viticulture practices, the winery reduces the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. It endeavours to use natural elemental sprays of sulphur and copper to fight mildew and reduce synthetic sprays where possible.

Award-winning Chardonnay

The 2017 vintage Chardonnays of the winery have attained some great results in the recent wine shows. It has attained great recognition in the Yarra Valley for its cool climate representation. The 2017 Equilibrio Chardonnay has received a Gold medal from 2018 Decanter World Wine Awards, attaining a score of 96-points. The wine is made strictly from Mendoza clone from the Hexham vineyard – identified as the best performing clone from the vintage. This Mendoza clone creates a rich, elegant Chardonnay embodying opulence and generosity.
