Australia’s Oldest Owned & Operated Wine Company: Angove Wines

Located in McLaren Vale, Angove Wines was established in 1886 by Dr William Thomas Angove. He arrived from England along with his wife and family to settle down by starting his own medical practice in Tea TreeTully. Interestingly, he started making wines as a tonic for his patients. Producing fortified and dry table wines, he won the hearts of many people, giving him to the boost. He converted his hobby into a business. Started with 10-acre land, by 1903, the company was planting on 100 acres of land.

The St Agnes winery was opened in 1907 and in the present day, the fifth-generation members are taking care of the business. Richard and Victoria Angove are at the helm, ensuring the standards set by their ancestors are met. While overseeing the business, they also think about the future generations to come. Hence, keeping soil healthy is of utmost priority. This approach is the key reason why the company has been hailed as a leader in practising sustainable and organic winemaking practices.
