The Mitolo Wines founded by Frank Mitolo, an Italian immigrant, is located in picturesque McLaren Vale wine region. Characterised by rolling hills, proximity to the sea, ancient yet fertile soil and a Mediterranean climate, it lies 45 minutes south of the capital of Adelaide. The region is known for some of its oldest vineyards of Shiraz, Cabernet and Grenache. Along with winemaker Ben Glaetzer and wine grower Loprestis, the Mitolo Wines have earned a position in the winemaking industry for producing premium wines.
A Journey Through the Past:
Along with a rich viticulturist culture, the Mitolo family migrated from Italy to Australia in the 1950’s. With the typical Abruzzo Philosophy to be ‘forte e gentile’ which means strong and gentle, they worked hard to establish their families potato business. Along with their hard work to become market gardeners, they always tried to stay true to their origins where wine, food, family and friends, all were an integral part to any celebration.
In 1990’s, Frank Mitolo began making wine to share it with family and friends as a pastime. In 1999, after a long 5 hour discussion with Ben Glaetzer, a winemaker, they realised the potential and together dreamt of making wines which were an ultimate expression of the rich provenance of McLaren Vale. As a result of this meeting, they had a business plan which was as simple and straight scribbled by them on a piece of napkin. It said- integrity, power, quality, individuality, purity and elegance.
The first vintage they received under the label was 2000 G.A.M. Shiraz which was named after the three children of Frank Gemma, Alex and Marco. Since then 10 different wines have been added to the range which are characterised by their different personalities and stories. They work closely with the Loprestis family who were an old friend and wine growers. The fruit produced by them is the real essence of Mitolo wines.
Present Day
Over the years, Mitolo wines have gained popularity in the wine markets with their premium range of wines. Frank Mitolo and Ben Glaetzer along with Loprestis family work together to ensure that their wines do not lack integrity, power, quality, individuality, purity and elegance, which are the pillars of their business plan.
