Regions Contributing Largest Share of Shiraz Red Australian Wine

If there is one grape variety which has made Australia a world-wide name in World Wine fraternity, it is Shiraz. Shiraz, or Syrah as it is sometime called, is a red grape and the wine made from it is a red wine. Shiraz is used in making single-varietal wines as well as blends, such as the famous GSM (Grenache-Shiraz-Mourvedre) blend. This single grape variety covers almost 39000 hectares of land area which is the largest for any grape variety in Australia. It is the most widely known and demanded red Australian wine.



An important point to note in respect of Shiraz grapes is that these are grown in warm climatic zones. So, you are not likely to find its plantings in upper reaches of hills where the temperatures are cool. Wide growing area in different climatic conditions allow development of wide varieties of Shiraz wines. Shiraz grapes are turned into wide variety of wines, varying from medium to full-bodied ones, different flavours and profiles and having varied structures and profiles.

Shiraz Growing Regions
Barossa Valley is perhaps one of the most important shiraz growing regions of Australia. Most of the shiraz wines produced in Australia have grape originating in this region. This is the region where the oldest shiraz vines were planted in 1843 and are still producing grapes.
The other important regions are: Heathcote, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Mclaren Vale and Hunter Valley
